Check Yu Change (Check Your Change)

This social innovation project, utilizes television drama, in the form of a "reality show" to highlight the plight of the marginalized youth and engages the community, existing NGOs, Governmental agencies and the business community in identifying positive interventions for the youth. Realizing that youths may not feel comfortable telling thier stories on air, we will work with a cadre of other young actors to dramatize these real life stories via a weekly television series dubbed "Check Yu Change". In essence, two things will be occurring simultaneously; the "troubled" youth will get an opportunity to tell thier story and will benefit from positive intervention such as counseling, involvement in sports, financial assistance for school, afterschool assitance, and other such positive intervention. On the the other hand, other young persons will be engaged in developing thier acting skills and be paid to do so. In the span of 1 year, we aim to directly impact a minimum of 50 young persons

Education: For those youths who need it the most, financial assistance will either be provided directly through funds generated by this program or by assisting them with applications for scholarships and other source of funds that they do not know about or may not know how to access. The partnership with the Maya Mopan Resource Center will also provide the critical home work help and after school program needed to ensure the success of the affected young person.Employment: Actors in this story will be paid for thier work. Over the period of a year at least 50 persons will have been paid for their work, while still in school or employed in other capacities. Through various drama camps and workshops, actors will sharpen this skill. Recreation: The intervention by the Counselor and the Behaviour Change Specialist, will involve identifying what the needs are of the youth. For those whose needs are recreation, every effort will be made to ensure that they get a change to become involved in these activities, by efforts to sponsor thier participation in team via sporting equipment and coaching. Regular weekend camps that provide arts, music and other forms of workshops will also provide recreation for the youth, and a change to be in a postive environment, where mentorship and positive influence is infused.Parenting: By aring this show, we will be indirectly impacting parents. Viewers will become aware of the many options available to them in addressing the issues they are facing with their young people. The story we will be telling at any given time, will invariably be someone else's story and the approach at solving the issue, can be the very intervention a parent needed to try in changing the story of their troubled youth. As part of the publicity for the show, we aim to host a twice monthly call in show, where parents and other concern citizens can ask questions, make suggestions and air concerns regarding issues affecting youth. This will also provide a platform to "big-up" young persons who are doing the right thing and highlight positive changes.The impact of this social innovation project will be far reaching and will invariable keep the spotlight in a loud way on the real stories regarding youth. This is more than a show; this is a powerful movement!

There are several end products or results that will derive from this program.1. A reality television series dubbed "Check Yu Change" highlighting the plight of the youth; dramatized by other youth based on true stories. The show follows the path of the youth and constantly "check their change".2. Positive interventions by matching youth and where possible families, with available services and ensuring that they get the help they need; as well as interventions such as weekend camps for youths.3. Financial assistance in the form of scholarships to youths that need it the most4. An opportunity for youth to develop their acting skills, be a positive influence and receive financial compensation for thier work.

The primary target community is Belmopan and surrounding areas; with a focus on the youth population. However, the reach and impact of the program will be wide since it will be televised. Initially working with school principals and counselors, we will identify those youths who can benefit most from these intervention. Our Behaviour Change Specialist and Counselor will seek to work with the identified families, connecting them with the help they need. A part of the intervention includes weekend lock in sessions with the identified youths, with the goal of providing positive influences.

The main source of revenue generation will be from advertising. Local productions have traditionally had a wide viewership; here in Belize and with Belizean living abroad. Therefore, getting companies to advertise on the show, will not be a problem. The buy in will come once they see the reception to the first one or two episode. A production company that does high quality work has been identified to produce the show; which will be aired on most local television stations free of cost. At least one local television show has already agreed to air the show free of cost. The concept of the show, along with a demo, will be discussed with various businesses. The goal will be to engage 14 companies weekly in advertising during the show. We are confident that since many companies have an existing advertising budget, engaging them to advertise in "Check Yu Change" will not be difficult, particularly when they understand that a portion of thier advertising dollars will be going towards assisting with positive youth interventions; thereby, giving them the opporutnity to be good corporate socially responsible businesses. The wide reach of the show will ensure that the program is beneficial to investors. The advertising will not be limited to businesses, but entities who work with children and youth will also get the opportunity to advertise during the show. Considering the number of businesses in Belize, garnering 14 advertisments weekly will not pose an issue. Furthermore, we are confident that the show will be well received by the viewing public. A substantial portion of the funds generated from this show will go towards paying youth actors and providing assistance for the other marginalized youths identified. This assistance will be in the form of school fees, sponsorship of sporting teams, youth camps and other such ventures. Businessminded individuals who wish to do so will be engaged in marketing the show and getting companies to sign up for advertisment spaces; on a commission basis. As the demand increases, DVDs and other promotion items will form part of our marketing model; cups, caps, shirts, bumper stickers, etc. The goal is to make the catch phrase "Check Yu Change" a household brand. This phrase has alreayd been made popular by a local well known politician, although used by him, in it's most logical way. Examples of catch phrases "Have you Checked Yu Change" "It's time to Check Yu Change" 'I'm Checking my change"
