- Describe the need or problem you want to address
- The children of Seine Bight Village are the most vulnerable to crime and violence in the Peninsula. Inhabitants of Seine Bight’s source of livelihood is fishing, jobbing out and tourism activities. Tourism has grown rapidly over the past few years but the original inhabitants of Seine Bight (mainly Garifuna) have been left behind. Women for instance, are employed in domestic chores at hotels/resorts; earning approximately $15-$20 USD per day. Limited financial resources make it difficult for the families in Seine Bight to provide for basic needs for their children. These children have grown up playing sports but, with limited expert coaching support and have great vast athletic potential. Splash incorporated its programs in Seine Bight working with St. Alphonsus RC Primary School, to get more children involved. By dedicating interest and coaching, we aim to cultivate positive and higher values for these children to have a long-term impact in their lives – including better employment opportunity placements.
- What is the main product or service you will offer?
- The service we offer is recreational sports, particularly track and field/running sports, professional coaching 5 days a week after school for children Standard I to VI and learning to dive, for children Standard V and VI on select weekends. An extremely important aspect of the coaching is teaching positive values that will lead to a better future for these children. The product we offer is instillation of a can do, can succeed attitude in the children of Seine Bight, so that they Stride into The Future with confidence.
- Briefly describe the community or population that will benefit from your solution and how do you plan to involve them in the project
- The population that will benefit directly are about 40 children attending Seine Bight Roman Catholic School and they are already involved. In essence, 40 families will be benefiting from the Program. The population that will benefit indirectly are the parents of these children and the community where they live.
- Does your proposal have a business model (i.e. strategy to generate revenue)? Please describe
- Our proposal has a community support objective rather than generating revenue in the short term. Some of these children will progress to becoming professional tour guides, professional divers and some of them will find employment with Splash and other dive companies in Belize.Splash Dive Center has had community support programs for many years. This is a larger program and is focused on Seine Bight Village, since this is the village that has the most vulnerable children in the peninsula.
