Youth Advocacy Through Arts (YATA)

Youth Advocacy Through Arts (YATA) has existed in Belize City since August ,2013. The focus of the initiative was to create a platform where youths who were living in the marginalized communities had the opportunity to address social issues affecting them using the performing arts. Youths were trained specifically in theatre production and stage performance. The plays focused on social issues that are common within participant communities such as gang violence, child abuse, sexual violence against women and girls within the home. Youths helped to develop ideas that were fine tuned in workshops at weekend training. The primary focus of YATA is to reflect the realities of poor communities while empowering participants to make choices that will positively impact their lives. YATA continues to be a safe haven for youths in Belize City. Quite recently YATA developed a new initiative through which we were able to partner with UNICEF and other community partners. We exist to see change.

Describe la necesidad o problema que deseas abordar
We here at YATA have seen the challenges that exist within marginalized communities and how it affects how youths develop into mature individuals. We would like to see less males recruited in gangs and the crime statistics involving youths to change significantly. Our program presently addresses gang violence and sexual violence against girls and how those main issues negatively impact communities but we also highlight how adults are the causes of some of these problems by their negligence. based on research and feedback from audiences, we have extend our reach to address other issues like sexual promiscuity and sexual abuse within homes. The problems society sees in the news involving young people has been linked to conditions in the home and communities that is seldom discussed.YATA seeks to influence youths in making better choices where they have the power to do so but also to advocate for how youths are who come from damaged communities or broken homes are treated by society. We are driven to tell the stories from a perspective that you would not get on the evening news. We are also committed to educate the public about how we can better help our youths.
¿Cuál es el principal producto o servicio que ofrecerás?
Presently YATA offers social plays for school audiences that are based on youth issues. Those plays include Sleepless Girls, Gang and Boyz, Def Chorus, However, we also offer cultural and environmental based productions for a wider audience such as For Love of Country, Wake and Tides of Men .Presently, we are working on a production about bullying with Restore Belize.
Describe brevemente la comunidad o población que se beneficiará de tu solución y de cómo planeas involucrarlos en el proyecto
At the inception of YATA, the population target was young people ages 13- 24 who lived in communities that we constantly saw in the news for crime related activities. Also young men who came from neighborhoods where they were more likely to be recruited by gangs. While YATA has had to be more inclusive of the young people invited to join us, the content of the social plays remain the same -to tell stories of that affect youths. The primary audience of YATA continues to be the south side community where we take our street shows. While there is much challenge in terms of generating income from such types of production, we are committed to reach areas of the city most affected by crime involving youth. Young women and men ages 13-24 remain our target group however, often times our production attracts people of all ages. Lessons learned have taught us that in order to see the changes we want to see, our productions need to be family oriented. One way of involving families is by YATA creating an event within an event which was our recent idea called WALLS DOWN . In this event focused on declaring a safe day for kids to play from all surrounding areas, we created a family space for young children, teens and adults and used sports and games and other activities to draw attention for our theatre shows. One way of involving community members was also in our interviews with children which sought to get their feedback on crime in their neighborhood. YATA offers workshops to school participants as a way of sharing our method of constructing thematic based productions. We also use workshops to recruit new members into the casting pool of actors.
¿Tiene tu propuesta un modelo de negocio (es decir, una estrategia para generar ingresos)? Por favor describe
YATA uses its annual plays at the bliss to generate funding as well as our contracts with private organizations who want to use plays as a way of spreading awareness on topics relating to their mission. The way the play offers revenue is that YATA will write a play and cast youth members into the production who also serve as marketers for the play, selling tickets and promoting the show through various mediums. YATA through its partnership with the Institute of Creative Arts (ICA) books the bliss for two nights and pays actors from ticket sales. YATA will also create its first ticketed event for schools called 3-5 LIVE, a saturday show at the bliss, which run on television on a monthly basis.
